French Noir Split-leg Apron:
The Story Behind The Split-Leg apron
I created this split-leg apron after watching standard aprons fail creatives and looked at what was available in the marketplace. You sit down to throw a pot, work in a cafe, potter around in the kitchen and your lap is exposed. You kneel in the garden and everything gaps.
The split-leg apron solves it. It’s one apron cut into two generous legs, so it drapes over you like a second skin. You can straddle a pottery wheel, sit on a low stool at a market, or climb a stepladder in the studio and you’re still covered. Read more on why I made it here: ‘Why everyone needs a split-leg apron’.
Made Sustainably From Rescued Fabrics
This is slow-made workwear. Most fabrics used in these aprons are sourced from industry offcuts, private collections and deceased estates and rarely, if ever, purchased from retail outlets.
The French Noir uses a beautiful commercial-weight black canvas that was saved from landfill – heavy, close-weave, built to last. By using rescued textiles, each apron keeps high-quality fabric in use and makes each piece truly one-of-a-kind. The fabric may have slight variations in weave or tone – that’s part of its history.

Washing & Care Instructions for Split-Leg Aprons
A gentle hand wash is all that’s required.
If your apron has been used heavily with clay, makeup or paint, hang it on the washing line and hose the residue off outside. You’ll save your washing machine and water your garden at the same time.
Should you choose to machine wash, use a very gentle, cool or warm wash with fabric softener. Do not hot wash or tumble dry.

FAQ’s:
Is the split-leg apron heavy to wear all day?
No. Although it’s made from heavy-weight canvas, the close-weave drill is breathable and the weight sits on your neck and waist, not your shoulders.
Will the black canvas fade?
Like all black cottons, it will soften to a beautiful worn black over time. Cool washing and avoiding harsh bleach will keep it darkest longest.
What size is the apron? Do you do different lengths?
Split-leg aprons are hand made and as different fabrics are used, the size can vary slightly but they’re also designed to fit most.
Q: Is each French Noir apron identical to the photo?
A: Not 100%. Because I work with rescued fabrics, no two are exactly the same. The cut, construction and French script detail are the same, but the texture and exact tone of the canvas may vary slightly, making yours unique.
